Here are a few of the most often asked questions I receive about clothes, closets and fashion related things. Perhaps you’ve had these questions too?

Q. I looked at some old pictures of me and realized that even though they were 15 to 20 years old, I’m still wearing the same clothes. If you’re not a woman that does a lot of clothes shopping, what are the best, most timeless pieces of clothing to own?
A. First of all, I would definitely add the following:
- a well tailored blazer, either in black or navy; this staple goes with everything, dressed up with a skirt or dressed down with a plain white t-shirt and jeans.
- a denim jacket in a dark wash, not too distressed; this is now considered a ‘must have’ for every wardrobe. It goes with everything, from colored jeans to maxi dresses. Perfect for that ‘business casual’ look.
- a ‘lbd’ – little black dress; you need this for everyday with the aforementioned denim jacket or blazer and for dressing up with heels. It actually doesn’t even need to be black…just something that’s a solid color and fits well. Consider taupe, purple or navy as options other than black.
- scarves or statement jewelry; I can’t say enough about adding to your solids by adding a pop of color.

Q. I’ve heard that black clothes make you look thinner. I’ve also heard that when doing videos or pictures for professional speaking engagements, you should be wearing bright colorful clothes. What do you think are the best colors and patterns to wear for videos and pictures of speaking engagements?
A. Yes, while black is generally considered to be slimming, solid black is not always your best option. Depending on the lighting in the video or picture, solid black might absorb all shadows and make your natural curves disappear. Black with some texture, for example, lace, is a better choice. Navy and charcoal are also great options for a darker outfit. Also, you should avoid bold prints and crazy patterns and they can be distracting.
Q. I have to wear orthotics. I usually wear sneakers, because these are the best most supportive shoes for my orthotics. When I need to look really professional, what do you think are the best shoe choices for a woman who has to wear orthotics, and therefore cannot wear any type of heel?
A. There are now a number of shops that carry women’s dress shoes made for orthotics or with orthotics built in. Check out these links below and let me know if you find anything you like.
