Your Closet Questions Answered…Besides Just What to Wear

Your Closet Questions Answered is a new regular feature to Anne’s Wardrobe Wisdom.

Ever have a question about your clothes or your closet and don’t know whom to ask? I’m here to help.

Here are a few of the most often asked questions I receive about clothes, closets and fashion related things. Perhaps you’ve had these questions too?

Q: With the season changes, such as they are in Northern California, do you put away summer clothes and summer shoes during colder months? And if so, where do you put them?

A: Yes, I definitely change up my closet for fall/winter and spring/summer.

Here’s what I do:

• Remove all sandals and summer shoes from my shoe shelves and store on the bottom shelf of my closet. I use a zippered suit coat clothes bag to store them in as it keeps my shoes from getting dusty and is easy to access if I need to (such as for travel to a warm weather location). At the beginning of spring, I put my summer shoes back on the shelves and put my winter shoes (i.e. heavier closed toed shoes) and boots into storage. If you don’t have the room in your closet, you can always put them under your bed.

• Move my sweaters and scarves to a more prominent position in my closet so that I can easily see them during the winter months. All sleeveless and summery tops are moved to the back.

Q: Should I hang my clothes by item type or color?

A: I think this is a personal preference. I’ve actually done it both ways, but have found I like everything sorted by color better. Say I’m looking for a white top, with all the whites together, I can easily decide if what I want is a t-shirt, sleeveless top, or button down. As a result, this makes getting dressed that much easier and faster.

Q: My biggest problem/question is always how to accessorize. I can put outfits together but they never look finished.

A: An easy way to accessorize an outfit is to add a scarf in similar or complementary colors to what you’re wearing. With the range of sizes and fabrics available today with scarves, you can be sure to find something that will work for every outfit. Be sure to get a few in different styles – a square kerchief, a long drape, a triangle, and an infinity. Here’s a cheat sheet on how to tie scarves that is very helpful.

Depending on what you are doing, scarves can be hot and in the way. Alternatively, some great jewelry can also make or break an outfit. Consider getting something with matching earrings or bangles. And no, they don’t have to be exact matches; just be sure to stay in the same color family (i.e. silver with silver, etc.)

When you’re looking for jewelry, be sure to get help from the sales associate. Often, they are familiar with all the pieces scattered throughout the department and can help you find pieces that will work well together, saving you time and frustration.

Finally, read this excellent article on how to choose jewelry for your body type.

Q: What are your favorite online places for ideas and ordering?

A: My favorite place to get ideas (link to other post) is Pinterest. You can easily just type in your item of clothing, for example ‘palazzo pants outfit’, and see all kinds of ideas on how to style your piece. I love using this for inspiration.

I also subscribe to and follow a number of fashion bloggers. For example, Penny Pincher Fashion is a great blog/website with wonderful ideas on inexpensive clothing.

While I like to shop online, I can be very particular about my clothes. So that means, I don’t order from places where I can’t return the items.
